After launching the city’s first LGBT+ Film Festival last year, the Bangkok Screening Room next month will bring the event back with nearly a dozen  films, talks, performances and an art exhibition focused on issues facing the LGBT community.

Running six days in July, the venue will screen 11 movies curated by Thapanan “Ken” Wichitratthakarn, an indie movie buff and editor who also works at marketing and PR agency Ogilvy.

Among the highlights of this year’s festival is the 1991 movie My Own Private Idaho, starring Keanu Reeves and River Phoenix. The film, which is considered a landmark work of new wave gay cinema, circles around protagonists Mike and Scott, two young men who embark on a journey of personal discovery.

There’s also the American biopic Mapplethorpe, which takes a close look at the life and career of photographer Robert Mapplethorpe, who is known for documenting the BDSM scene in New York during the late 1970s.

Presented by the Embassy of Israel in Bangkok is Family in Translation, which depicts the story of Amit, a husband and father of four living in a small town in Israel, and the events that unravel after he tells his family that he wants to undergo a sex change transition.

For those who like coming-of-age movies, there’s Being 17, a French melodrama that follows two teen boys as they experience romantic and sexual awakenings.

The screening schedule is available online. Tickets are THB300 for adults, THB250 for students and THB200 for children (12 and below).

The LGBT+ Film Festival 2019 will take place from July 2 through July 7 at Bangkok Screening Room.

The 52-seat alternative cinema has been opened since 2016. It sits on the second floor of the Woof Pack Building on Soi Sala Daeng 1, and is reachable from MRT Lumphini (exit No. 2) or BTS Sala Daeng (exit No. 4).
