In the French movie “Pattaya,” yet another foreigner is surprised to discover that the sexy girl he has his eyes on is a man — the most predictable joke when making a movie set in Thailand.
After the movie proved somewhat successful in its homeland, Pattaya is coming to Thai cinemas in July. The teaser, with Thai subtitles, was released this week.
Directed by Franck Gastambide, Pattaya drew USD14.4 million and became this year’s second best opening for a French-language film so far, according to Variety.
The plot centers on two Frenchmen who dream of leaving the greyness of their French neighborhood for the neon lights of Pattaya, the world’s capital of sex tourism. And, of course, to get there cheaply, they recruit a blind dwarf from their hometown to compete in the World Championship Muay Thai Tournament for dwarfs.
Yup, the dwarf punchline is also presented.
Judging from the trailer, aside from the typical jokes about the lovely ladyboys, you get a little taste of Thailand’s weirdness in this film. Fried bugs, a playful monkey, and ping pong show touts are all represented here.
Will it suck like Hangover II? For those of us who have lived here long enough and got tired of the in-your-face ladyboy joke, most likely, yes.
