Fans of non-mainstream films won’t have to travel as far to enjoy their art flicks when a beloved indie theatre reopens only steps away from MRT Sam Yan.

Curtains will close for the final time at House RCA on Aug. 31, after which its new home will open inside a mixed-use development called Samyan Mitrtown. Consider it a sequel: After 15 years in Royal City Avenue, the new alternative cinema will be called House Samyan.

House Samyan will open late September with some special programs Bangkok cinephiles are already looking forward to watch on giant screens again, such as Quentin Tarantino’s cult classic Pulp Fiction, Woody Allen’s love letter to his hometown Manhattan and Al Pacino-starred suspenseful Dog Day Afternoon.

According to film production company Sahamongkol Film, which operates House RCA, House Samyan will sit on the fifth floor of the Samyan Mitrtown building with three cinemas instead of the two at the former location.

House RCA first opened in July 2004 with two screens. It’s best known among cinephiles for screening independent and noncommercial films that aren’t shown at major chains such as Major Cineplex or SF Cinema.
