Hotel Art Fair is back for the fifth year this weekend, and this rendition will be held at Phrom Pong boutique hotel 137 Pillars.

If you haven’t been before — the annual event takes over an entire indie Bangkok hotel, with artists or galleries from all over Asia and the world each taking a room to use as their exhibiting space. Visitors can then wander from room to room checking out the art, mingling, and often getting precious, intimate face time with the gallerists and artists… not to mention enjoying cocktails (gratis!) provided by various alcohol sponsors throughout the weekend.

This year’s theme is “Art in the Sky,” and rooms have been rented by artsy folk from Thailand, Japan, China, Malaysia, and the Philippines, as well as by famed artists such as Joan Cornellà Vázquez, Manabu Koga, and Niam Surachai Mawornkanong.

Joan Cornellà Vázquez’s outstanding dark, satirical illustrations were featured earlier this year in a widely-visited exhibition at Bangkok’s Future Factory. It was probably the only art exhibition the city has ever seen that had a cover charge.

Manabu Koga, of Tokyo, has been making waves for her underwater photography of women in lingerie and bikinis. Her work has been described as sitting in the crosshairs of fine art, street fashion, manga, and cosplay.

Thai acrylic painter Niam Surachai Mawornkanong made his mark last year with an exhibition named A Place Called Earth. He describes his work as therapy, and the only way he feels he is able to communicate with the world.

Discover these artists (perhaps even in person) and their work at the laid-back, always fun, and perennially hip Hotel Art Fair.
