The insulting riches of Bangkok’s party scene exist thanks in no small part to the army of DJs who organize, promote and rock the living hell out of the city’s nightlife. In “Hang the DJ,” Coconuts gives you a chance to get acquainted with some of the capital’s better beatsmiths.
How did you get into DJing?
I’ve been collecting records since I was in high school. When I moved away from home, the building that I moved into had one of Helsinki’s best record stores downstairs and I spent mad hours there every single day for years. One sunny afternoon around 2006, me and my friends were out on a island in front of Helsinki and my friend who had a bar in the city told me he was short of a DJ for the night. I was already wasted at that time and he knew I had a big record collection and told me to take the ferry home, pack the records and show up to DJ later that night. So I went home, got me records and played a six-hour set at the bar and the place was packed. Got my first residency after that night.
Describe the music you play in five words.
Funky Disco Groovy Raw Soulful
What’s the most fun you’ve ever had at a gig? Give us all the ugly details.
The most fun I can remember is probably the Kolour Sundays at Scarlett in August 2012. I was playing out on the terrace and the vibe was crazy. I did a one-hour set of old school R&B and hip-hop and people were jumping and dancing the whole time. I had horrible jetlag when I got to the venue and right when I started playing the jetlag was gone. It was an amazing time!
What’s your favorite venue to play in Bangkok?
Bed Supperclub has been my favorite venue to play at so far. People come there with such an open mind and ain’t afraid to dance the night away to unknown tracks. Whatever it is, disco or old school R&B and hip-hop people always get down to it. Expect the unexpected!
Which track are you most excited about right now?
“Shake That” – Dansson & Marlon Dope vocals sampled from a G-funk track and a heavy bass line!

Dubstep: yea or nay?
Nay.
“ ______ always packs the dance floor.”
“Good Times” – Chic A timeless classic.

What’s one song you will never, ever play?
Anything by Justin Bieber.
What’s the best way for someone to get you to play their request?
Last week when I was playing at Glow a lady requested me to play it hard and deep. More requests like that please!
What shows/residencies do you have lined up?
I play every Saturday at the top floor of The Continent Hotel at Axis & Spin. I also play Scarlett at the Pullman G every other Friday. In July, I’m playing a few gigs in Helsinki, Finland and Copenhagen, Denmark.
