Hang the DJ: Episode 12 – Dennis Frost

How did you get into DJ-ing?

It was 2007 on Sakhalin Island in Russia. I organized my first party by myself and played electro-house music. I remember these times with a smile. After a successful season there I changed places and started working in Khabarovsk City in 2008. I continued DJ-ing and eventually moved to Thailand in 2010. I now play three different mainstream flavors: dub step, techno and hip-hop.

Describe the music you play in five words.

Appropriate music for appropriate atmosphere.

What’s the most fun you’ve ever had at a gig? Give us all the ugly details.

Oh, very hard question! Let me think…The Biggest Foam Party just outside of Khabarovsk City. I played in the evening, beginning with a beautiful sunset and ending with house music and an unbelievable atmosphere. The crane of the foam machine was not working, so workers repaired it while thousands of people watched. And you know what? It was a lot of fun for them. After 30 minutes everything was ready.

What’s your favorite venue to play in Bangkok? Why?

For sure, it’s Glow Nightclub. And only oneexplanation: THE PEOPLE. Wherever you are, whatever type of music you play, people are the main toolfor the artist’s mood.

Which track are you most excited about right now?

Tom Middleton – “Penrose Steps (Original Mix)”

Trap music: yea or nay?

Yes! And drum step and breaks and break beat and glitch hop and drum and bass and jungle. All kind of madness is good if you can understand it well.

“______ always packs the dance floor.”

Cement and wood

What’s one song you have played before but will never, ever play again?

When I was six years old I pushed the PLAY button on a Boney M cassette tape. Not sure if I will do that again in the future.

What’s the best way for someone to get you to play their request?

If u [sic] have an interesting proposal, just ask! But I won’t play the “Justin Bieber Sessions.”

What shows/residencies do you have lined up?

I have a residence at Glow Nightclub Bangkok and Play Club Pattaya, where I’m also the art director. I organize events from outside and inside of Pattaya and Bangkok. Now I’m focusing more on doing promotions of hip hop music, and it’s definitely a new way for me.
