Famed director recalls Oct. 6 Thammasat Massacre in immersive installation this week only

Tomorrow is the 45th anniversary of the Thammasat University massacre, and a downtown arts venue will mark the occasion with a video installation created by acclaimed filmmaker Apitchatpong Weerasethakul.

Get lost in one of Thailand’s darkest days in which police and right-wing paramilitaries gunned down and lynched students on the university’s campus through archival footage, survivor interviews and text bombarding viewers from three sources at Silence tomorrow through Sunday at the 100 Tonson Foundation.

The 21-minute video was made by Kick the Machine Documentary Collective, a group of four Thai artists comprised of famed independent filmmaker Apichatpong Weerasethakul, Akritchalerm Kalayanamitr, Chatchai Suban and Pathompong Manakitsomboon.

The foundation is located in Soi Tonson, near BTS Chit Lom. The installation is part of an ongoing exhibition by Apitchatpong, A Minor History, which runs in two parts through February. It also examines the 2018 discovery of three murdered activists in the Mekong river.

Admission is free, but advance registration is required via Line @100tonson, Facebook message, hello@100tonsonfoundation.org or 098-7896100.

Visitors are advised to come at least 15 minutes prior to showtime. Due to violent and graphic scenes, the movie is suggested for audiences 15 and up.

Memory-holed by the state, the Oct. 6, 1976 massacre at Thammasat University was stoked by disinformation and propaganda fanning the flames of nationalism and provoking security forces and right-wing paramilitaries to murder dozens of student pro-democracy campaigners.
