Fallen angels: The beguiling sins of Thailand’s beauties gone bad

Aspiring beauty queens have it tough. On top of maintaining that 10/10 look, they also have to meet society’s expectations and maintain a perfect SFW image.

Apparently doing this and remaining human are mutually exclusive, as it seems every time a new pageant is held to identify the “ideal of Thai beauty,” a raft of ugly new scandals floats to the surface, from the salacious to the silly and occasionally vile.

Here are some of Thailand’s fallen angels:

Despite whatever the fat acceptance movement might want you to think, here in beauty pageant-land having those extra pounds is a crime. Weluree “Fai ”Disayabut surrendered her the crown of Miss Universe Thailand 2014 after the Internet decided she was too big for it. Some ugly comments about wishing death upon many of her countrymen might have also been a factor. Fai was replaced by the thinner and politer first runner-up, American-Thai Pimbongkod “Ellie” Chankaew.

Miss Universe Thailand produced more than the usual share of tabloid headlines this year. Next up is the story of its second runner-up, Sunannika “Nampetch” Kritsanasuwan. Nampetch was officially booted from the Universe after some too-sexy photos were uploaded by an anonymous antagonist, who also accused her of selling sex. Although Nampetch said she took the steamy pics, some of which show her on all fours in the back of an SUV, as part of her work as a “pretty.” Her excuse that she took the work to pay for her “sick mom,” didn’t hold water with many, who asked why her money at the time was spent on all the fancy bags and cars she was photographed with.

Miss Maxim 2014 contestant “Eva” Kamonwan Fak-On’s magazine sex-goddess ambitions ended in March when she was busted on Thonglor, along with her friends, totally rolling on ecstasy. Remember kids, take it easy with the yaa-dom ‒ it’s a dead giveaway.

Vaseline your teeth and tape your boobs. There’s a lot of beauty pageant secrets known by seasoned veterans. Teaching children to smoke ketamine is not one of them. Indeed, a picture of you encouraging little kids to prematurely plunge into the K-hole is definitely not a good image to show to the public. However, the finalist of Miss Maxim 2013, Kwanjai “Roxy Maxim” Khaempradab, might have thought otherwise when posing for this video which went viral on the nets. She was arrested and became an object of internet scorn after the video of her helping a 5-year-old boy to inhale Ketamine was released.

The story of Miss Thailand Universe 2011’s Chanyasorn “Fah” Sakornchan is a prime example of how merely possessing natural beauty is not enough for one to win a place the spotlight. She surprised the media by bringing to light the dark side of the politics behind the realm of beauty. She admitted to having boob and nose jobs as “advised” by a benefactor before the contest.

In a contest where participants are expected to look good while striding in two tiny pieces of cloth on national television, one wouldn’t expect wearing just a little bit less would be a problem. Miss Thailand World 2005 “Angie” Atchara McKay found out the hard way, announcing her resignation after only a week of service under the pretext of “pursuing her studies” and a modeling career. However she later confessed that, like many others, she was forced to step down due to nude modeling photographs being “discovered.”

Marriage is also prohibited in the world of beauty contests. After all, who wants to celebrate the beauty of a totally unavailable woman? That would really ruin it for the guys. In 2003, the second runner-up of Miss Thailand World, Jatuporn “Joy” Sangthong was booted for that very reason after her wedding photos were dug up and revealed to the public.

Yollada “Nok” Suanyot was the woman many tourists wanted to meet. Photo: Sanook

Perhaps the most peculiar case would be of Yollada “Nok” Suanyot, a contestant in the Miss Tourism International in 2001. She was revealed to be a transgender woman after getting caught with a fake ID card. Now, fair enough, apparently you gotta be a biologically born woman for these things, after all, how could they hope to compete against a determined ladyboy? Apparently Nok was a beauty pageant veteran, but nobody had caught on to her chromosomal disposition.
