Adding to the already flourishing cafe scene in Chiang Mai, a new destination with nearly 200 Lego sets for guests to play with, recently opened in the northern city.
Because one does not simply grow out of Legos, Blockland Lego is a new space for Chiang Mai adults and children to spend time building the Lego masterpieces of their dreams. At a cost of THB140 per hour, the cafe provides pricy lego sets including those from the Marvel superheroes and Star Wars’ Death Star collections. The latter is comprised of over 4,000 pieces and retails at USD500 (more than THB16,000).
Taewon Park, the South Korean expat who owns Blockland Lego, said he decided to open the business in Chiang Mai following the popularity of Lego cafes in his country. He was also inspired by his nieces and nephew, who always ask him to buy a new set of Legos after only playing with the last set a few times.
“The problem is they [the children] get bored easily. As we know, Lego sets are expensive. When I went to Korea early of this year, I heard that Lego cafes are a very popular business. Then I thought if there was a Lego rental shop [here], it would be great for me and the children. So why don’t I bring this business to Chiang Mai?” Park said.
As far as we know, Blockland Lego is the first Lego cafe in Thailand. The shop also hires Lego enthusiasts as workers, in case you need help building your set.
“There are 194 lego sets in my shop, and I’ll buy 75 more in August. Many of the children [here] play with the Friends and Minecraft series,” Park said.
