Columbia Pictures to take over Cartoon Network waterpark in Pattaya

Singapore may have minions and Transformers, but Pattaya will soon get Ghostbusters and men in black.

A slew of characters and settings from Columbia Pictures are coming to a water park southeast of the capital at the movie studio’s first theme park announced this morning.

Studio owner Sony Pictures said characters from movies such as Ghostbusters, Jumanji, Bad Boys, Men in Black and Hotel Transylvania will be featured in rides and attractions at Aquaverse, a movie-themed water park on Bang Saray Beach in Chonburi province. The park will take over the 5.6-hectare Cartoon Network Amazone Waterpark, which is now closed.

It will be divided into eight themed zones. It is unclear how much will just be reskinning the old park and populating it with Will Smith lookalikes, but a 12-meter water coaster, the “world’s biggest” funnel, surfing, and a go-kart track are among 100+ rides advertised. Sony said the park will feature live shows by artists and DJs from all around the world.

The park is a collaboration between Sony Pictures and Thailand’s Amazon Falls, which has operated the park since it opened seven years ago as a Cartoon Network attraction.

Sony executive Jeffrey Godsick said in announcing the park that Aquaverse was the first step in plans to develop eastern Thailand into an immersive entertainment destination, which dovetails with government ambition to develop it into an economic development zone.
