Coconuts TV: The dying art of Chinese Opera in Thailand

The rarified and campy art of Chinese Opera (ngiw) was brought to Bangkok hundreds of years ago by Teochew Chinese immigrants from Guangdong province.

These Gypsy-like folk still ply their trade around Thailand today, but to significantly less faces in the crowd.

Coconuts TV spoke with a musician and singer who has performed ngiw for over 40 years and doesn’t plan on stopping any time soon.
