Chinese-style mega market to open in Bangkok

If there’s one thing Bangkok sorely needs it’s another large, chaotic and traffic jam-prone market.

JSP Property Co. seems to have realized just that.

The firm is constructing a massive 56-acre USD267 million Chinese-style shopping complex on the outskirts of Bangkok.

Dubbed Sampeng 2, this monument to capitalism will showcase 1,000-plus vendors presumably selling every trinket, item of jewelry, clothing, footwear and home décor the Middle Kingdom has to offer.

Merchandise will include those locally produced by Thai factories as well as wholesale and retail traded items.

Bangkok residents might wonder if Chinese products are the lure then why head to Sampeng 2 when you can already visit Bangkok’s Chinatown?

The CEO of JSP, Thanongsak Manthamraksa, boasts that shoppers will not be disappointed. Afterall there will be a Thai-inspired “floating market” in a custom built freshwater lake. Think Amphawa market collides with Siam Paragon. To maintain authenticity food vendors will peddle their treats off rowboats and serve customers ashore the banks of the lake.  Both Thai and Chinese fare will be offered.

The CEO is confident that Sampeng 2 will not be lost on shoppers as he states, “the complex will obviously give different ambiance and feelings from modern-day department stores to the local people as well as foreign tourists, especially the Chinese, who will visit daily,” Xinhua reported
