Chinese New Year 2020: Be a part of ICONSIAM’s captivating Chinese New Year festivities

Bangkok is never short of joyous occasions and eclectic events. There’s no doubt that Thai people love celebrating all kinds of festivals, regardless of ethnic and religious contexts.

Although most of us are still recovering from raucous New Year’s Eve partying, Chinese New Year is  already creeping up on us. This holiday is as big as Christmas is in Bangkok, except that it also comes with dazzling decorations and red packets filled with money!

Around this time of year, Bangkok burgeons with happening events and festive food stalls. However, ICONSIAM Eternal Prosperity Chinese New Year 2020 definitely takes the cake.

Although this venue takes a while to get to, we assure you that the multifaceted experiences it proffers will definitely be worth your while. Hop on a shuttle boat from BTS Saphan Taksin and you’ll soon be indulging in countless new experiences within this mesmerising THB54-billion dollar mall.

When you arrive, you’ll enjoy a majestic view of Chao Phraya River from the banks of the mall. Step inside to see the longest fountain in Southeast Asia, which is flanked by 500 shops and 100 restaurants.

Calling ICONSIAM a shoppers’ paradise isn’t an exaggeration at all. An opulent bastion of modern retail experiences, this experiential shopping venue will also be hosting a plethora of performances themed around the Year of the Rat, from January 22-26, 2020.

The variety of performances that will light up ICONSIAM this festive season are sure to be fun for the whole family. This year, ICONSIAM has specially flown in all the dancing crews of the Beijing National Acrobatic Troupe. Performers of Cirque du Soleil calibre, these incredible showmen and their soul-stirring performances have clinched coveted awards around the world. You’ll be mesmerized by their intricate costumes and stunning synchrony. Don’t miss the 9th Wave, which showcases these performers’ acrobatic prowess and parkour skills atop Chinese poles, which is a metaphorical depiction of a ship’s sail that withstands the rough seas of life.

Performances like Swinging High Clutches and Ball Catching aren’t to be missed — they’ll take your breath away!

Chinese New Year is not complete until you catch a lion dance performance. Honoring this age-old Chinese tradition, which is regarded as a herald of good fortune, ICONSIAM will unleash not one, but four lions to bless all shoppers with good luck. Each lion represents a different aspect of prosperity. The red Cantonese lion, for example, represents purity; while the Hainan lion, whose lion headdress is replaced by that of a tiger, represents good health. Twin dragon dances will also be held, which are meant to bless one and all with abundant wealth, so don’t miss these elaborate performances at the River Park (ground floor), which will happen from January 23-26, 2019, at 6:45pm-8pm nightly.

Aside from outdoor performances, there will also be indoor acrobatic shows by the Beijing National Acrobatic Troupe,  at Charoennakorn Hall (M floor) as well. You’ll be awed by flexible contortionists, pole dancers, umbrella and yoyo performances, along with Chinese opera performers and musicians who will line this hall.

Chinese culture aficionados can also sign up for mask painting and makeup workshops, and even witness a live Chinese calligraphy demonstration.

In Rassada Hall (First floor), ICONSIAM will be displaying one of the most venerated deity statues, the Jade Dragon, for worshippers who believe that praying to this deity brings good fortune. According to legend, the Jade Dragon is the guardian and protector of every river on earth and it is believed to grant abundance and prosperity to those who venerate him. 500 amulets will be distributed on each day of this festival.

After you’ve had a blast at all these pop-up activities, chill out and refuel in the SOOKSIAM (G Floor), where legendary hawkers from Chinatown and Thonburi have set up shop and will treat you to an array of festive foods, such as Tang Yuan — sweet Chinese rice dumplings (similar to Thai Bua Loi) that are believed to bring prosperity and draw families closer together.)

Spend your red packet money at ICONSIAM to be rewarded with even more good fortune. From January 13 to February 20, 2020, international tourists can enjoy huge rewards when they shop:
