Academy Award-winning director Spike Lee is in Chiang Mai today shooting a new Netflix movie starring the Black Panther himself, Chadwick Boseman.
Lee’s Instagram feed shows he arrived in Northern Thailand last month to film Da Five Bloods, on March 23.

“What’s up, this is Spike. As you can see the cast and crew is eating lunch. We finished the first day of presentography before lunch. That’s how we do. That’s how we roll,” Lee says cheerfully while holding a slate in one clip.
“Here we are in Thailand, Da Bloods. Peace,” he added.

The 62-year-old veteran filmmaker has posted photos of himself in the mountains, rice paddies and with local residents. One photo shows Lee with a boy wearing the kind of iconic Yankees cap he became famous for when he shot to fame in the late ‘80s.

Da Five Bloods follows four African-American Vietnam war veterans returning to the jungles of Southeast Asia to find their fallen squad leader and the promise of buried treasure in a film being produced for streaming platform Netflix.
“Our heroes battle forces of man and nature – while confronted by the lasting ravages of the immorality of the Vietnam War,” reads a Netflix synopsis. It’s Lee’s fourth Netflix project and follows 2017’s She’s Gotta Have It.
Boseman stars as their lost leader and the vet quartet is rounded out by Delroy Lindo (Malcolm X), Clarke Peters (The Wire), Norm Lewis (Scandal) and Isaiah Whitlock Jr., most recently of Lee’s Oscar-nominated BlacKkKlansman.
Self-declared Black Panther ultrafan Kamonchanok Noree said Boseman came to eat at her Chiang Mai restaurant yesterday.
“He’s so sweet in real life, not stuck up at all. He took photos with all of us. … He insisted on paying for everything he ate… We can guarantee it’s him because of the name on his credit card,” said Kamonchanok, who posted photos of the encounter online.
While the post was met with many excited squeals and people tagging their fellow fans, some pointed out that Boseman was almost unrecognizable.
“Why is His Highness so skinny?” asked one, citing Boseman’s role as the Wakandan king in Black Panther.
While it is unclear how long the cast is in town for, the film will reportedly also shoot in Vietnam.
Netflix has yet to disclose a release date for the film, but we’re sure the T’Challa Thai superfans will be watching.
