Bent train tracks close section of northern line

The derailment of a train last week at Talat Phlu station, which injured two passengers waiting at the station, has forced the State Railway of Thailand (SRT) to announce a six-week maintenance closure of a 300 kilometer stretch of the northern line.

The derailment at Talat Phlu station was caused by soil underneath the tracks subsiding, forcing the train off the tracks. Days earlier, a Chiang Mai-Bangkok express train with more than 200 passengers aboard derailed in Long district of Phrae.

An inspection of the tracks revealed that long sections were bent, reported the Bangkok Post.

The SRT will suspend services from Sila-art station in Uttaradit’s Muang district to Chiang Mai from Sept. 16 to Oct. 31. Replacement buses will take passengers to and from Chiang Mai.
