Tomorrow and Saturday, Bangkokians will have a chance to see Academy Award-winner “Amadeus” like they never have before — accompanied live by the Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra and Mahidol University Choir.
The special two-night event will see the fictionalized account of Mozart’s life screened in HD as Ludwig Wicki, an award-winning Swiss conductor who has spent the past decade conducting film music live, pulls the entire experience together.
Check out the orchestra rehearsing.
In 2008, Wicki conducted the 21st Century Orchestra and Chorus in the world premiere of The Fellowship of the Ring at The Culture and Congress Centre in Lucerne in his hometown of Lucerne, Switzerland — the first time the Lord of the Rings trilogy was screened alongside a live performance of the original soundtrack.
Since then, he’s continued he’s conducted the live-concert world premieres of Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, Gladiator, Fantasia, Star Trek and Titanic.
The guy obviously loves film.
Of course, part of the fun/stress of live-conducting musicians to action on screen is the fact that it doesn’t really allow for slip-ups.
“This means nothing can go wrong because the two have to be in-sync… I believe this could be a beginning of a good creative future for Thailand,” Dr. Sugree Charoensook, founder of the Mahidol University College of Music (one of the best music conservatories in the kingdom), told Workpoint.
There will be two performances of Amadeus LIVE: tomorrow at 7pm and Saturday at 4pm. This Bangkok premiere will take place at the Prince Mahidol Hall at the Salaya campus of Mahidol University in Nakhon Pathom’s Phutthamonthon District — which is about half an hour from downtown Bangkok.
Tickets start at THB1,500 (about US$48) and are available on Thai Ticket Major.
