Bangkok Fabulous: Super Size Me

For the lazy fashionista on a budget, there is no trend worth paying more attention to than jewellery. We all know that one piece of bling can transform a plain outfit into an up-to-the-minute fashion statement. What’s more, it needn’t cost a fortune.

While when you spend next to nothing on a dress or a pair of shoes, it often has an unflattering cut or falls apart the first time it comes up against a packed BTS, with jewellery it’s easier to get away with spending less and still managing to look cute.

This season, it’s easy to be on-trend if you remember one golden rule: supersize. Bigger is better ladies, so don’t let any delicate little silver rings or necklaces try and convince you otherwise.

Ditch the little charm bracelets and subtle diamond stud earrings and opt for something altogether louder. I’m talking earrings that graze your shoulders, chokers so extravagant they make your neck ache and cuffs that inhibit your joints. We’ve got to suffer for fashion.

Dolce & Gabbana paved the way for extravagant earrings. These colourful, tasseled, pom-pom numbers looked like a first time crafter had been let loose on a primary school’s art box. Paired with some fabulous prints and a kaleidoscope of colours, the result was a Sicilian-inspired dream. But it’s hard to imagine wearing these earrings in real life and not looking like a crazy lady who frequents jumble sales.

Etro’s big earrings were paired with equally loud outfits as Dolce & Gabbana’s, proving you don’t have to take an either/or approach when it comes to statement jewellery. Chunky and colourful, Etro gave the chandelier earring a new lease of life.

In a similar vein, Christian Dior’s spectacular chokers include an intricately crafted coral choker, which was the focal point of an otherwise plain outfit. Admirable craftsmanship went into this piece. We’re attracted to the fact it looks like something the evil Princess Mombi from Return To Oz would wear, and she had some seriously kick-ass accessories.

It’s also possible to go super-sized without all the over-the-top detailing, if you so wish. Chanel’s oversized bauble bracelets and necklaces are instantly recognisable as Lagerfeld’s work; they scream simple and chic. Or, if that’s still too showy, Celine’s large knotted leather cuffs provide alternative inspiration.

The bottom line this season is: if it’s ridiculously large, it’s a keeper.

And if you’re not a fan of all things shiny and bejewelled? Celine‘s knotted leather cuff or Alexander McQueen‘s bee-studded chokers give minimalists something to get excited by too.
