A downtown arthouse cinema will reopen next month with an event that will draw both cinephiles and potheads.

Over two years since it went dark mid-2020, Cinema Oasis announced this morning that it will welcome moviegoers again next month with its second edition of the Amazing Stoner Movie Fest. The event will screen movies selected from submissions sent to the organizers. The best film will receive the “Golden Ganja” award and US$1,000 cash.

The lack of iconic Thai stoner movies was cited as the reason for organizing the event, said cinema co-owner Ing Kanjanavanit.

“The world has Cheech & Chong, Harold & Kumar, but there’s no Piak & Odd,” Ing said. “It was an experiment to see if such a thing as a Thai stoner film existed.”

Composer Somtow Sucharitkul announced last week that his bizarro, self-referential wacky horror frolic The Maestro had already been chosen for the fest.

“Obviously this film is best enjoyed while wasted!” he wrote on his socials.

The Amazing Stoner Movie Fest will run Nov. 10 to Nov. 13 at Cinema Oasis. The cinema is located on Soi Sukhumvit 43 and can be reached by foot from BTS Phrom Phong. More details will be available at a later date.

The first Amazing Stoner Movie Festival took place in 2019 before the use of cannabis was legalized. Its 2020 edition was indefinitely postponed due to the “plague apocalypse.”

Cinema Oasis is the brainchild of Ing Kanjanavanit and Manit Sriwanichpoom — two filmmakers behind the banned movie Shakespeare Must Die, a Thai-language adaptation of William Shakespeare’s Macbeth.
