Electro anti-hero Skrillex will treat fans to some ear-bleeding bass and full-throttle table-turning in Bangkok next month.
The Los Angeles-based DJ, producer, and former emo-band frontman is set to make his Bangkok debut at Ekkamai hip hub Sonic on November 16.
The gig comes amid a busy schedule, which sees him darting between Asia, Russia and Mexico, and the venue is expected be packed to the sweaty rafters with loyal followers hooked to this new wave of genre-mashing, bass addicted electro.
Although 24-year old Sonny Moore is regularly beaten with the shitty end of the critic’s stick – NME condemned him as a “rampaging barbarian who’ll nick anything floating past in popular culture” – the bastard prince of dubstep has successfully racked up an impressive list of aficionados. Dave Grohl publicly professed his admiration for the button-pushing boy wonder earlier this year and he has reportedly recorded a collaboration for Kanye West’s upcoming album. Even Virgin’s Richard Branson appears to have caught the Skrillex bug after receiving DJ lessons from Moore at this month’s Virgin Mobile Freefest in Baltimore.
He also bagged three gongs at this year’s Grammys, including the coveted Best Dance/Electronica Album, in addition to a celebrity girlfriend in Elle Goulding. All in all, it has been a pretty good year for the California kid who, since rising to fame in 2010, has succeeded in bringing the British-born dance genre dubstep to the American and international mainstream.
Tickets for the concert at Sonic, Bangkok’s latest live music venue and brainchild of the guys behind Cosmic Cafe, are due for release in the next few days, however, they’re expected to be snapped up in a flash, with local blogs and social media already abuzz with anticipation of the WOMP-WOMP wizard’s arrival in The City of Angels.
