Weekend Warrior: What to do this weekend in Bangkok – March 22, 2013

Welcome to Weekend Warrior, where we offer you a few ideas to kick-start your weekend of mayhem. Warriors, go forth.

Friday

Future Sound of Bangkok at Glow
While the hype machine expends many turns promoting foreign DJs during their stopovers in Thailand, too rarely are domestic, Bangkokian turntable artists given the same privilege. Future Sound aims to pair Thai DJs with their foreign interlocutors and thereby unite Thai and farang nightclub enthusiasts under the massive roof of a single, stellar party. Tonight’s DJs include Thailand’s Sarayu, as well as Jaydubb and Felix Moreno.
10pm. THB300 (includes one free drink). Glow Nightclub, Sukhumvit 23, Bangkok. BTS Asok station.

Saturday

The Return of DJ Suharit at Moose Bangkok
After his noble, but ultimately ill-fated journey into gubernatorial politics, DJ Suharit Siamwala is returning to his native habitat: the DJ booth. Head down to Moose this Saturday to celebrate brilliant gubernatorial reign that might have been, and the bombastic, hard-rocking that still is.
5pm. Free. Moose, Ekamai 21. BTS Ekamai station.

St. Patrick’s Society Emerald Ball at Imperial Queen’s Park Hotel
There’s really only one time per year when Bangkok’s St. Patrick’s Society really gets a chance to shine and the organization has gone out of its way to make the most of its brief moment on the spotlight. Replete with racks of food, oceans of booze and utterly baffling musical offerings (Beatles cover band? “Unicorn band”???) the Emerald Ball promises plenty of the indulgence for which the Irish are famous, followed closely by the guilt which is their equally vibrant legacy.
6:30pm. THB3,200 for individuals, THB3,000 per person for groups of 10 or more. Imperial Queen’s Park Hotel, Sai Nam Thip, Khlong Tan, Khlong Toei, Bangkok 10110, Thailand.  BTS Phrom Phong station.

Sunday

Bloc Party at the Bangkok Convention Center
Bloc Party would be an indie rock band if the phrase “indie rock” still meant anything, but seeing as the definition has fled that particular genre tag, we’ll go ahead and call them a “band with guitars that you can sometimes dance to.” And, you know what, they’re not bad in that latter capacity. Check them out on this rare sojourn to Thailand, and take a minute to browse their  cool-as-a-cumber website.
6pm. THB1,700 to THB2,000. Queen Sirikit National Convention Center. MRT Queen Sirikit National Convention Center.

Monday

Sound City screening at Paragon Cineplex
Some people say the weekend ends on Sunday, but those people are lacking in ambition. Or maybe they just haven’t heard that Dave Grohl’s documentary Sound City is screening this Monday at Paragon Cineplex. Sound City chronicles the rise and fall of the Los Angeles recording studio of the same name, which helped track albums from rock and roll icons such as Neil Young and Nirvana.
7pm. THB150. Paragon Cineplex, inside Siam Paragon shopping center. BTS Siam station.
