Weekend Warrior: What to do this weekend in Bangkok – January 18, 2013

Welcome to Weekend Warrior, where we offer you a few ideas to kick-start your weekend of mayhem. Warriors, go forth.

Friday

Leodoris at Grease

Danish DJ Kristian Rix is stopping by Bangkok…again. After a New Year’s performance that by all reports rocked some socks, Rix (nay Leodoris) is bringing the jams to Grease on Soi 49. Come prepared for a full night of DJs and an “unreal” LED display.

9:30PM. THB300 (includes one free Ciroc drink). Grease (Soi 49).

Isan Dancehall #13

The creators of Isan Dancehall have dared to mix Thailand’s native rumblings with the similarly splendid sonic catastrophe that is Jamaican dancehall music. Come prepared for ribcage rattling bass and the sighting of at least one dreadlocked individual.

9pm – 2am. THB250 (includes one free beer). Opposite (Sukhumvit Soi 51). BTS Thong Lo Stop.

Saturday

Together Festival ft. Snoop Dogg, Justice, others

He’s calling himself Snoop Lion now. He thinks he might be Bob Marley reincarnated. He is probably the only person in the world who can do these things while remaining more-or-less universally adored.

6pm. THB2,300, THB2,500 – 2,700 for VIP. Bitec International Trade and Exhibition Centre, Bangna.

Sunday

Burma 2012 at 2snakestudio

Australian photographer Philip Blenkenship has a reputation for creating shocking images. “Burma 2012,” an exhibition housed in Blenkenship’s 2snakestudio, features his work, along with the work of two other photographers who have endeavored to document Burma between 1989 and the present. The show is available for viewing by appointment only, but should offer a treasure trove to those interested in either photography or our neighbors to the north.

By appointment only. FREE. 2sankestudio, 31/33 Soi Nana, Maitri Chit Rd., Bangkok, Thailand. Nana BTS stop. Phone: 08 601 21972.

Free orchestra concert in Lumpini Park

This yearly event offers Bangkokians free access to concerts by the Bangkok Symphony Orchestra. Lie out on the grass and enjoy the not-yet-excruciating heat while listening to a rotating series of guest vocalists.

5:30pm. Free. Lumpini Park, Rama IV, Bangkok.
