The insulting riches of Bangkok’s party scene exist thanks in no small part to the army of DJs who organize, promote and rock the living hell out of the city’s nightlife. In “Hang the DJ,” Coconuts gives you a chance to get acquainted with some of the capital’s better beatsmiths.
How did you get into DJ-ing?
Although I knew in principle how to DJ since the late ’80s when I first started going to parties, I didn’t start doing it professionally until I moved to Thailand and needed a job in 2004. People kept calling me back to play so I kept doing it and here I still am happy! I still can’t believe people pay me to do it. (Did I just write this!?)
Describe the music you play in five words.
Infectious, techy, moody, deep, delicious.
What’s the most fun you’ve ever had at a gig? Give us all the ugly details.
Ibiza Portinax beach party in front of 7,000 people on an obscene monster Funktion 1 sound system. You can imagine the rest … The best part was I got invited back the next year!
What’s your favorite venue to play in Bangkok?
Well I have to give the nod to my employer and people that have supported me all these years – Bed Supperclub.
Which track are you most excited about right now?
It’s hard to boil it down to one track as I play many different styles from chill to lounge, club and techno. But I am really excited about moody techno these days, so I will offer up Henrik Schwarz – “Take Words In Return (C2 Vocal Remix)”
Dubstep: yea or nay?
I think I like what they are calling chillstep … the wobble stuff doesn’t do it for me.
“ ______ always packs the dance floor.”
Asking a DJ for his secret weapons is like asking a woman her weight … well here is a tier-two dance floor filler, Doomwork – “Dreamland (Supernova Remix)”

You have to come to Bed to hear my tier-one tracks ; ).
What’s one song you will never, ever play?
Any Swedish House Mafia … if you want to see me go postal in the DJ booth, just request an SHM track.
What’s the best way for someone to get you to play their request?
Ask for something from the Get Physical, Cocoon or Crosstown Rebels labels.
What shows/residencies do you have lined up?
I am really excited about my We Love Techno Friday nights at Bed. We just had our official launch party in February and I had the honor of warming up for our guest Sven Vath who played a RIDICULOUS set. Bed has given the We Love Techno DJs (Vincent, Stewart, Mary Jane and myself) the license to play what we want. The result has been a night where people come to engage with the DJ and get lost in some really sophisticated music. Well worth checking out.
