Christopher Jonathan Roy Chaafe’s journey on Thai singing competition “The Star” ended in tears after he failed to garner enough fan votes to secure another week in the running.
Last Saturday, Christopher delivered a rendition of “Jija” by Silly Fools and received second-lowest ranking on the show with seven votes. These votes were culled from 100, selected live show attendants and constituted 10% of his entire popular vote share. Christopher sang Potato’s “Kob Khun Tee Rak Kan” (“Thank you for loving me”) as his last song on “The Star” ’s stage, leaving his fans tearful to see him go home.
Christopher’s elimination has come as a surprise to many viewers as his popularity has held solid over the past few weeks. He once received the highest mid-week votes and his Facebook public page has attracted over 40,000 members.
Christopher, an 18-year-old Gold Coast native, was the first farang to ever compete in the competition and has been nicknamed “Noom Ood Dte Lia” – the common Thai pronunciation of “Australian guy.” Raised in northeastern Udon Thani, Christopher speaks fluent Thai with an Isaan accent, a vital factor that has helped him win huge support from Thai fans.
According to his public page, Christopher has stated his intention to become a Thai citizen. After his elimination, he has insisted that he will pursue a music career in Thailand.
Below is his rendition of Potato’s “Kob Khun Tee Rak Kan.”
