One of the biggest names in electronic music played Bed Supperclub over the weekend and one thing’s for sure: He’s still got it.
Sven Väth’s career as a DJ and producer started in the early ’80s and his body of work is enormous. He was one of the first DJs to play trance records, and he also founded the trance music label Harthouse. In 1995, Mixmag named his album Accident in Paradise one of the best dance albums of all time.
A lot of my friends were really hyped for this show, but not so much for the THB1,200 ticket price. The show had a limited guest list and also no pre-sale or ticket reservations, but eager beavers could book dinner before the show for an extra THB400. But after it was all said and done, everyone I talked to felt like what they paid was completely worth it
As promised, Väth delivered an energetic three-hour set, to which the crowd gave a passionate response. He’s not only a DJ but also a performer and he engaged in such histrionics as throwing his hands up in the air and taking shots of Jägermeister straight from the bottle. Väth also played on vinyl without the use of a laptop, something you don’t see much of anymore in today’s electronic music scene.
The gig was originally going to happen on the restaurant side (or “white room”) of Bed, but at the last minute was changed to the club side, presumably because of the better sound system. At any rate, it was a good decision. Väth is known for pioneering Germany’s down-and-dirty underground scene, so to have him playing in the white room just wouldn’t be the same.
Väth’s performance technically served as the kickoff for Bed’s “We <3 Techno” night, which has actually been going strong on Fridays for a few months now. Sven was the first big name to grace Bangkok 2013 and now I’m excited to see what else this year has to offer!
