Carabao performs at Season Awards to repay debt for guitar smash-up at least year’s event

Thai rock star veteran Aed Carabao, or Yuenyong Opakul, recently performed at this year’s Season Awards in Bangkok as repayment for smashing his guitar in a fit of rage at last year’s event.

Fans applauded when he walked on stage and Aed thanked everyone for the opportunity to sing at the event again after last year’s debacle. Video of the instrumental assault is below.

Aed said he felt like a fool for throwing his guitar on the ground. He said he didn’t blame anyone else but himself for being such a “hot-tempered up-country gangster.” He said he wanted to sing a song at this year’s Season Awards to pay the debt back from the incident last year.

Carabao was formed in 1976 by a group of Thais studying in the Philippines, led by Aed. They are loved for their Phleng phuea chiwit , songs for life, that celebrate the working man and focus on social or political issue.

Many of us also know Carabao from the energy drink by the same name that is produced in affiliation with the group. The buffalo skull logo, designed by Aed himself, is everywhere in Thailand.

“Carabao symbolizes the spirit of individuals who fight for the cause they believe in. Not by force, but with determination, hence the slogan: The Fighting Spirit of Carabao,” says the energy drink’s website.
