Author, Coconuts contributor, and former punk rock musician Jim Algie will be spinning a free tribute to the punks tonight at Thong Lor’s WTF Bar and Gallery.
His set starts at 9pm and will include early groundbreaking tracks from the likes of The Ramones, The Clash, The Sex Pistols and The Dead Boys, before taking a turn toward The Velvet Underground, The Stooges, MC5, David Bowie and The New York Dolls.
Not to be left out are the 80s and 90s carriers of the punk torch, including The Replacements, The Pogues, The Jesus and Mary Chain, The Cramps, Nirvana, and even Metallica. You might catch a few bars of some more modern faves like The Strokes and The White Stripes.
Infamous punk movies will be screened on the wall in the alley outside the club while California’s DJ Ladybug will play a short set of her favorite punk mutations. Some schooling in slam dancing 101 is also planned for the back lane.
Jim Algie toured the world with various punk bands for 10 years and worked as a college-radio DJ before moving to Bangkok to become a writer. His latest book, the punk tome “On the Night Joey Ramone Died: Tales of Rock and Punk from Bangkok, New York, Cambodia and Norway” will be for sale at the venue.
