We all love Fridays –you’re probably counting down to one right now – but isn’t it time to think out of the usual Friday night box and spread some love to other days of the week? Here’s one big reason why you’ll soon be declaring, TGIT instead of TGIF.

Whether you’re new here in Bangkok or you’ve been part of the City of Angels for a while, you’ll want to check out this atmospheric Thai night market on the banks of the Chao Phraya River. Every Thursday evening Salathip Thai restaurant at Shangri La Hotel, Bangkok brings Thai culture alive for a fun, foodie-focused market.

Here’s what to expect:

Be prepared for a little thrill when you walk into the beautiful Thai teak pavilions next to the Chao Phraya River. You’ll be transported to another time where traditional culture was part of everyday life. Experience the magic of Thai cooking at live food stations, starting with classic dishes that are loved all over the world. Watch as chefs prepare fresh tom yum with chili paste, aromatic herbs, local produce and fresh seafood. You might just learn the secrets to preparing a spicy tom yum broth like a pro.

Or sample a timeless culinary staple – Thai barbecued chicken, grilled to perfection on skewers over hot coals. The satay style chicken is served with sweet and savory peanut sauce and vinegar and chili sauce.

It wouldn’t be a proper Thai night market without one of our favorite dishes, som tum. Watch as the spicy papaya salad is effortlessly tossed and seasoned with lime, palm sugar, fish sauce and a handful of little (but powerful!) chilis. It’s so entertaining to watch som tum being made, and it makes that first fiery mouthful even more worth it.

Now that you’ve experienced the spice of classic Thai dishes, it’s time to move on to dessert: crispy bananas fried with rice flour, coconut ice cream and sticky rice with sweet, ripe mangos and coconut milk.

Save some space for the main course, though. That’s right, we’re not done yet! After browsing the night market and sampling some of your favorite Thai dishes, take a seat at a luxurious table at Salathip and enjoy a main course, served with a smile.

Try the Cha Plu Set, which includes fragrant green curry with grilled pork tenderloin and betel leaf, crispy seabass topped with sweet and sour chili sauce and Thai fried rice with lemongrass. If you’re a fan of Wagyu beef, you’re in luck. The Prik Thai Dum Set features an exquisite dish of Massaman Wagyu beef cheek curry with roti, deep fried tiger prawns with a rich black pepper sauce and fluffy brown rice. The Phong Karee Set comes with perfectly cooked chicken marinated and grilled in the traditional Southern Thai style, stir fried baby lobster with yellow curry sauce and garlic fried rice.

At THB1,888++ per person these set dinners are a perfect way to enjoy the ambiance of a peaceful night market on Thailand’s River of Kings.

Although we’re tempted to say that food is the star of the show here, the Thai classical dancers are equally enthralling. The traditional musical instruments, Thai dancing and the cool breeze over the river combine to create a beautiful evening.

The night doesn’t end here though – take a stroll and browse through market filled with exotic gifts, like colorful woven fabrics and bags, organic products and much more.

Have a glimpse of what the experience is like!
