All aboard: Ride the rails like it was 1897 again

A special steam train excursion to Ayutthaya leaves Sunday to celebrate the 117th anniversary of Thailand’s first public rail line.

An annual tradition, the morning run leaves at 8am from Hua Lamphong station with stops at Samsen, Bang Sue, Bang Khen, Laksi and Don Muang stations before arriving in Ayutthaya at 10:30am. The return trip leaves at 5pm from Ayutthaya and should reach Bangkok around 7:30pm.

Tickets are THB222 and are available from many stations: Hua Lamphong, Samsen, Bang Sue, Laksi, Don Mueang, Rangsit, Taling Chan, Makkasan, Klong Tan, Hua Maak, Lat Krabang, Wong Wian Yai and Talad Phlu. These tickets usually sell out quickly, but trainspotters can still capture the majestic moment for Instagram by lurking along the route.

March 23 to 28 is “Thai Railway Week” and information about more events can be found on the Thai Railway fanpage.
