6 music festivals coming before 2015

Whether you’re a big fan of brash superstar DJs or a purveyor of deep techy sounds, Bangkok has got you covered. Here’s a guide to six upcoming music festivals to put asses of any disposition into motion.

Waterzonic

A stadium EDM party with heavyweight artists to get you fist-pumping, and wet. Line-up includes Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike, Nervo, Showtek, Sick Individuals, with support from local DJs.

Tempology 2014

Promising to keep it local, this party promises “a showcase for Thai talents, hosted by Thais.” Tempology will be hosted at Vana-Nava, an ocean park that is due to open later next year in Hua Hin. The three stages are designed by Thailand’s leading lighting/stage artists. The line-up is exclusively made up of Thai artists, with a focus on underground music with a wide scope of genres, from Molam and Hip-Hop to Drum n’ Bass and Techno. Examples are Sunju Hargun, Maftsai and Double Trouble, to name a few.

Big Mountain Music Festival

The biggest annual commercial music festival is back for another round, this time under the theme of “One Party to Cure it All.” We’re not sure what that means either, but there’s enough bands and enough people and enough space that it’s always fun. There will be six stages with performances from the usual suspects including Big Ass, Apartment Khunpa, Greasy Cafe and the like.

Dec. 7-8, THB1,900, Bonanza, Khao Yhai

Arcadia The Bangkok Landing

The infamous giant spider-cum-sound system made famous at Glastonbury is coming to Bangkok. Constructed from recycled afterburners, jet engines and scrap metals, the structure serves as sound system, performance stage and lighting rig, all-in-one. The focus is on electro house, dubstep and drum n’ bass, hence the line-up of The Bloody Beetroots, Roni Size, Far Too Loud, Skism, plus a number of respected local DJs.

Hosted by Retox, the party will be the first to put underground acts to such a big stage. The night boasts two stages, one for the big-room EDM sounds with underground techno and house on the other. Featured artists include Nicky Romero, Blasterjaxx, Dannic and DVBBS on the EDM stage, while Richie Hawtin, Padley Daley AKA Hot Since 82 and Loco Dice on the other.

Wonderfruit Festival

Probably the only festival in Thailand ever to boast such a diverse and line-up of heavyweights, Wonderfuit features a little bit of everything, from ‘90s Hip Hop and Future Beat Electronica to Berlin techno and Isaan Molam. It’s also marketing a socially responsible message of combining music with arts, dining, architecture and other outdoor activities. Example of what you’ll here there: De La Soul, Seth Troxler, Jamie Jones, Hercules & Love Affair, Chet Faker. Excited?  Got THB5,000 for it all??
