French man killed in Phuket brawl with Thai motorcyclist

A French man was killed in Phuket after he and his friend got into a fight with a Thai man who crashed his motorcycle into them early this morning.

The man, whose name has been withheld until his family are notified of his death, was found lying on the road in front of the Orchid Resotel in Patong around 4am this morning, The Phuket News reported.

He was shirtless and had two stab wounds in his chest, police said, although the cause of death has yet to be determined.

Kathu police said they were called to investigate an incident on Soi Sansabai at 4.12am where it was reported a foreign man had been killed and two men had sustained injuries during a fight.

“We were told by the victim’s friend, a 23-year-old Moroccan man named Said Missoury, who also suffered a stab wound, that as he and his friend were walking down the street to go back to their resort a Thai man, named as 33-year-old Somporn Kakkaew, drove his motorbike into them,” said Lt Sineenart Cherdchootrakulthong of Kathu police.

“The three got into an argument and a fight broke out. Somporn pulled out a knife and stabbed Mr Missoury one time,” she added.

Missoury told police he ran inside the hotel and heard his friend calling for help. When he turned around, he saw his friend collapse in the road.

Missoury and Sompron were taken to hospital to be treated for their injuries.

Police were unable to find a knife at the scene but are investigating CCTV footage from the area.
