Weekend Warrior: October 4, 2013

Welcome to Weekend Warrior, where we offer you a few ideas to kick-start your weekend of mayhem. Warriors, go forth.

Friday

ART: A Tale of Phantom

Chiang Mai art collective Nitimon is taking over WTF bar with an exhibition of video, art and performance installations. “A Tale of Phantom” examines social structure and how individuals live within or defy them. The opening reception starts at 6pm.

6pm. Free entry. WTF, Sukhumvit 51. BTS Thonglor Station.

DANCE: Glow’s 8th Anniversary Party

Bangkok’s main purveyors of underground music, Glow Nightclub, is celebrating its eighth anniversary on Friday. DJs from all walks of house and techno, including Sarayu, Sunju Harguna nd Superstar Panda, are manning the decks for the celebration, which includes deals on champagne and a free bar from 10:30 to 11:30pm. Dress code is “ futuristic” and the three best costumes will be commended with a free bottle and mixers.

10pm. THB 350 including one drink. Glow Nightclub, Sukhumvit 23. BTS Asoke Station, MRT Sukhumvit Station.

NEON: Dudesweet: Glow in the Dark

Pull out the tight and bright for this neon glow-in-the-dark party courtesy of good old Dudesweet. DJ ChubbyRock and DJ Paullie will divide up and spin tunes over two floors at the Cosmic Café.

9pm. THB 200. Cosmic Café, Royal City Avenue.

BOOGIE: Peaches & Prunes

Here’s a new monthly event from Bangkok nightlife bulwark DJ Jaydubb at the swanky digs of Le Derrière. For those who haven’t experienced the French-nspired bar at the back of QBar yet, “Peaches & Prunes” is the perfect excuse to sink into the plush sofas and try out their signature absinth fountain. The first guest DJ is Scott Hess, who you’ve probably spotted playing bass for Miss J and the Bandits or spinning at restaurants and bars around the city. We only have one question: who’s the peach and who’s the prune?

9pm. THB 300 including one drink. Le Derrière, Q Bar. Sukhumvit 11. BTS Station Nana.

Saturday

INDIE: Daniel Hart Live in Bangkok

It’s going to be a busy weekend at Cosmic Café – after Dudesweet cleans up the neon, modern violinist Daniel Hart will be playing a few upbeat, indie-infused tunes from his first solo album The Orientalist. Hart’s known for laying down some strings for successful indie rock bands like Broken Social Scene, Other Lives and The Polyphonic Spree. With three local opening acts, The Sangsom Massacre, Basement Tape and Shoot the Dog, this is sure to be a solid night of toe-tapping.

9pm. Cosmic Café, Royal City Avenue.

DANCE: MUSIC, DRINK, SMOKE, FxCK

Phra Arthit may be a fair taxi ride away from the city center, but with a solid crew it’s definitely worth the time – this is one of the hottest new destinations for underground parties that are easy on the pocketbook. On Saturday, Dickinson’s is hosting DJ Used and DJ Krit for an evening of deep house and techno blends. There’s no cover and happy hour – buy one, get one free buckets – is from 7 to 10 pm.

6pm. Free entry. Dickson’s Culture Café, Phra Arthit Road.
