Weekend Warrior: May 3, 2013

Welcome to Weekend Warrior, where we offer you a few ideas to kick-start your weekend of mayhem. Warriors, go forth.

Friday

6.2.13 Concert at Royal Paragon Hall
The pop stars fronting this bill (Tata Young, UHT, J Jetrin Wattanasin, et al) pretty much defined Thai pop culture in the late ‘90s. The 1997 concert 6.2.12 was a high-water mark for the era, and tonight’s festivities attempt to recreate that generation-defining moment. With ticket prices reaching into the healthy four-figures, it seems as if the concert’s organizers are assuming their target demo has made it into well-heeled adulthood. Indeed they have, and what better way to celebrate that than by revisiting past triumphs?
Fri. 7pm. Sat. & Sun. 2pm and 7pm. THB1,500 – 3,000. Royal Paragon Hall (Siam Paragon). BTS Siam station.

Saturday

Thai Cartoons and Abstract Illustration Exhibition at Bangkok Art and Culture Center
This exhibition, from artists Raj Loesuang and Somboon Hormtientong, features more than 400 drawings and paintings, as well as sculptural pieces. By marrying high art, pop culture and abstract expressionism, this showing blurs several of the art world’s established subgenres into a single, engaging whole.
10am – 9pm. Free. Bangkok Arts and Cultural Center, Pathumwan Intersection (facing MBK), Bangkok, Thailand. BTS Siam station.

Sunday

Chiang Mai…Through the Maps at TCDC in Emporium
This weekend the Thailand Creative and Design Center (TCDC) will be adding to its plentiful offerings with a display of nine maps that show how local citizens view the always-appealing haunts of Chiang Mai. As with all the TCDC’s offerings, expect equal measures of style and class from the show’s subjects and attendees.
10:30am – 9pm. Free. TCDC in Emporium, 622 Sukhumvit Rd, Klongton, Klongtoey, Bangkok 10110, Thailand. BTS Phrom Phong station.

Screening of Polisse at Apex Lido
This French film about child protection police in Paris makes no promises of light entertainment, but if you can resign yourself to the dolorous subject matter, all indicators suggest that it’s a fantastic cinematic experience. Having received accolades from seemingly every festival between Cannes and the moon, Polisse undoubtedly qualifies as an “event” in the world of independent cinema.
12pm, 6:40pm, 9pm. THB100. Apex Lido 1. Siam Square. BTS Siam station.
