Weekend Warrior: April 26, 2013

Welcome to Weekend Warrior, where we offer you a few ideas to kick-start your weekend of mayhem. Warriors, go forth.

Friday

The Radio Dept. at Sonic Bangkok
At first blush, Swedish dream-pop quartet the Radio Dept. seems like an odd band to be stopping by Bangkok. A consciously artistic indie rock coven, the Dept. has, since its 1995 inception, remained barely shy of mainstream recognition, raking in critical plaudits and showing up on just enough movie soundtracks to pay the bills. This show should provide a welcome divergence from the over-the-hill mega acts typical to the Bangkok concert scene.
8pm. THB1,200 (tickets available at Topman stores). Sonic Bangkok, 90 Sukhumvit 63 (Ekkamai), Bangkok, Thailand

Warpz Party: Out of Space Black Light Foam Party at BITEC Bang Na
Regardless which band receives top billing for this show, the true stars will be the black light and foam machines, both of which are primed to mix fantastically with an all-white dress code. Slot Machine, Flure, CMYK and Fomo shall provide musical accompaniment.
6pm. THB600 for standard admission, THB1,500 for standard admission plus three drinks, THB2,500 for VIP admission plus five three drinks. BITEC Bang Na. BTS Bang Na Station

Saturday

Chang Fest: Rock Summer Festival at Lakeside Muang Thong Thani
It wouldn’t be summer without a big, fat rock festival and it wouldn’t be a (Thai) big, fat rock festival without an appearance by Bodyslam. Chang’s aptly named “Chang Fest” brings some of the biggest names in Thai pop together under the unifying banner of corporate sponsorship. This weekend’s festivities will include performances by Bodyslam, Potato, Paradox and (perennial Coconuts favorite) Big Ass.
3pm. THB1,200. Lakeside Muang Thong Thani, Muang Thong Thani, Bangkok.

Sunday

Cautionary Tale at Jam Café
Shot in New York and Bangkok, Cautionary Tale is an independent film that follows the travails of a children’s TV show host who escapes to Bangkok in order to process the loss of his daughter, a task that he accomplishes with the help of the frontwoman of an all-female Thai rock band. The film’s trailer manages to incorporate all these elements and throw in a couple ukuleles to boot. Christopher Zawadzki, the film’s director, will be on hand to answer questions about all these things between the film’s first screening at 4pm and its second screening at 6:30pm.
Screenings at 4pm and 6:30pm. Free. Jam Cafe, 41 Soit Rong Nam Kang (Charoen Rat Soi 1), Sathorn Bangkok, Thailand. BTS Surasak station.
