For long, vanilla has been an insult. Plain. Bland. Boring.
A new cafe wants to explode that belief by serving the best of the orchid-derived spice’s characteristic sweet flavor and scent in a lethally trendy part of Ari around Rama VI Road. Dubbed Vanillian Inc., the newly opened dessert stop grows its own vines to produce the increasingly rare substance used in its drinks, desserts and other vanilla-based products.
Cafe hoppers shouldn’t miss the signature Vanillian Citrus (THB135), a vanilla shake spiked with orange cream and cinnamon, while those who prefer hot drinks can opt for Snow White (THB120), a glass of comforting warm milk mixed with vanilla beans and served with a cinnamon stick and marshmallow.
Desserts come in a few recipes but could satisfy many a sweet tooth for good, from vanilla basque cheesecake, vanilla custard croffle (that’s a waffle-croissant, for the uninitiated) and vanilla rum and honey custard. Groups can share the Vanilla 101 (THB195), which comes with three bowls: Two with ice cream made of vanilla caviar and vanilla pods, and a third containing vanilla creme brulee tart.
The venue also sells vanilla-based homeware and skincare items such as vanilla bean paste, diffusers, perfume sprays, candles and lotions.
It’s a good place to indulge in all things vanilla, the world supply of which is dwindling, driving prices through the roof.
Vanillian Inc. is located on Soi Phibun Watthana 2 in the Samsen Nai area. Get there by taking a ride from BTS Ari. It’s open 8am to 8pm every day except Monday.
