Unless you’re a masochist or some sort of poor creature who is allergic to gluten, it’s a safe bet that you enjoy pancakes.
That’s the thrust behind one of Bangkok’s newest restaurants – the Panary Cafe, which is so confident in our love of the doughy goodness that almost every item on its menu is a pancake.
Of course, these aren’t your typical flapjacks.
This new eatery on Soi Ari near the corner of Phaholyothin and Soi 7 specializes in Dutch pancakes, a somewhat obscure American specialty typically served for breakfast.
The idea behind Panary’s menu is simple. Each entree has at its foundation a slightly sweet and soft cake that’s baked in a cast iron pan. On top of this fluffy base patrons can choose to place over a dozen savory or sweet toppings, all of which would be at home on an American brunch menu.
On the savory side there’s poached egg and hollandaise sauce (THB175), smoked salmon and cream cheese (THB195), pizza toppings (THB165) and ham, cheese and egg (THB135).
The sweet menu is far larger and runs the gambit from a simple pancake served with butter, syrup and powdered sugar (THB135) to a dish liberally dosed with custard cream and berry sauce (THB150). For an extra THB35 you can add a scoop of ice cream.
For those searching for a unconventional approach to the American breakfast the Panary is worth a visit.
