Closed for months due to the pandemic, a charming speakeasy hidden in Thonglor thought it was time for something fun – drinks paying tribute to the great mystery-solver Sherlock Holmes.
008 Bar has introduced a new menu chronicling eight signature cocktails dedicated to Arthur Conan Doyle’s famous detective, who counts bar manager Supaktorn “Oak” Ramrauy among his fans.
“I read the books, watched the movies and series, everything,” Oak said during our visit Thursday.
Those coming in after a hard day and in need of a serious drink can opt for 7th July (THB420). Hardcore Holmesians may recognize that it’s the date of Doyle’s last day on earth. Therefore, the cocktail has everything to commemorate the doctor-turned-author from scotch whisky and bergamot-flavored Lady Grey tea to herbal liqueur. The glass comes with a dark chocolate for drinkers to pair. Sip, nip, repeat is highly recommended.
As some guests like to spike their teatime – tea cocktails, it is. Holmes’ residence on London’s Baker Street gets a drink, too. 221B (THB450) could easily be their new jam with its simple, frothy gin drink blended with Earl Grey tea while a tangy freshness is touched with lemon sorbet and liquor-soaked cherries on top.
The classic detective’s prized violin gets a beverage as well. The Stradivarius (THB420) is a tropical sweet-tasting decadent drink with Campari, clarified pistachio milk, banana liqueur and tonga beans. Like other glasses, it comes with an edible garnish to pair with: coconut wafers with white chocolate coating.
Some other drinks are dedicated to Holmes’ companion Dr. Watson and “Napolean of Crimes” Prof. Moriarty – one even influenced by Holmes’s entrance in the first chapter, A Study in Scarlet.
008 Bar is open 6pm to midnight every day. It’s located on the 11th floor of the Akyra Hotel on Soi Sukhumvit 55.
