A fragrant and subtly nuanced dish that has frequently been appearing in our minds ever since we first tasted it, the Tom Yum Crab by Ministry of Crab Bangkok is an immensely gratifying experience that we highly recommend.
Lovers of curry and all things spicy will certainly enjoy its rich gravy, which is made using fresh herbs like galangal, kaffir lime leaves and lemongrass.
Known for its flavorful seafood dishes such as mud crabs and king prawns, Ministry of Crab was founded in Colombo, Sri Lanka in 2011 by celebrated chef Dharshan Munidasa and cricket legends Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara. Ministry of Crab has been consistently ranked among Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants from 2015 to 2019 and persists as Sri Lanka’s number one restaurant.
A frequent visitor to Thailand, Chef Dharsan felt compelled to create his own rendition of Thailand’s classic tom yum crab. He wanted his iteration to be soupy and unconventional, but with an authentic tom yum flavor.
So far, his irresistible creation has been drawing return customers to the Ministry of Crab. Diners can choose their own crabs for their Tom Yum Crab dish, which range from 500g “small crabs” to 2kg “Crabzillas”.
Ministry of Crab only serves wild-caught mud-crab sourced from Thailand and from surrounding countries like Sri Lanka. Don’t pass on the establishment’s other trademark dishes like Pepper Crab and Garlic Chilli Crab too, which are plated in unique styles.
Ministry of Crab is located at Sam-ed Building, Sukhumvit 31 and is open for dinner from Tuesday to Sunday from 6pm to 11.30pm (last seating at 10pm) and open for lunch on weekends from 11.30am to 2pm.
