A taste of New York in the heart of Sukhumvit

Editor’s Note: Permanently closed

COCONUTS HOT SPOTS – Since opening its doors last year, Avenue Bistro has gone through a few slight changes. Firstly, it’s been renamed Avenue New York Grill to better represent the restaurant’s concept. The menu has also been condensed to reflect its New York theme, keeping the American dishes and letting go some of the French fare.

Inside the restaurant, dimmed lighting offers a romantic ambiance, whereas the joint’s previous lighting resembled the harsh fluorescents found at a fast food joint.

A sound system, previously wanting, has also been installed. During my latest visit, the all-familiar voice of American jazz sensation Louis Armstrong played in the background.

This time around, my dining partner and I started off with an appetizer of creamy pumpkin soup (THB160) with a touch of ginger. I highly recommended enjoying this dish with a glass of Brothers ginger cider – a refreshing, almost non-alcoholic drink imported from the UK that rarely appears on drink menus in Bangkok.

Another menu item that we haven’t seen before is the multi-flavored mashed potatoes (THB90). You can purchase these potatoes in flavors that include regular, garlic, carrot or wasabi.

Being an American, I’m always tempted to try out burgers in Bangkok to see how they compare to the ones back home. To me, a well-made burger reflects highly on the rest of the menu. I’m pleased to say that Avenue Burger (THB190) passed the test. Right from the moment it’s served you notice that Avenue New York Grill doesn’t skimp on quality, or quantity. They purchase artisan breads and buns from a bakery down the same soi (Sukhumvit 16) called Bertie’s Bread Boutique. The beef patty is well seasoned and cooked just the way you asked. In the new menu, the burger has been cut down from its original size, but it’s still hefty.

We also tried the Steak Frites (THB580) – which were comprised of a juicy piece of Bavette steak with shallot wine sauce, served with a side of grilled vegetables and fries. If you’re really into steaks you won’t be disappointed. Also on the menu are New York Strip Steak (THB850), Tenderloin (850) and Ribeye (875).
