Pour your own wine taps, you say?
…nice.
After thoroughly enjoying the beer taps on the tables at the newly-opened Cali-Mex last week, we knew we had to check this one out too. We’re *all about* this flexibility to choose our volume of booze.

We met Wine Connection’s company “wine educator” Wongsatit Keawnak at the basement shop and bar in Eight Thonglor, which has been there for a few years as a wine shop, but took over the location next door two months ago, adding tables and 18 taps — and this, friends, is where you can now grab a glass from the racks above and pour your own glass of grape-y deliciousness. Get a 30ml taste, a half glass, or full serving using a swipe card that you top up at the counter… not unlike at a Thai food court.

Take a seat at one of the new wine barrel tables to drink it up, or nab the big center table if you’re with a group.
One thing we liked about this system was that the price is arrived at by dividing the price of the bottle into milliliters, so you know that there’s a set price and process to this whole thing. And, there is no service charge, making it as cheap to drink in the shop as to buy a bottle to bring home.

Wongsatit told us that the most popular from the pour-it-yourself coolers is the Barking Owl Shiraz from Australia, which can be had for THB32 for a taste, THB79 for a half glass, and THB158 for a full size.

He also told us that similar taps were in place at their Convent Road location, which is now closed — but it hadn’t really taken off, he said. Apparently the customers usually assumed the opened bottles on display were just for tastings.

He told us that the shop’s idea was that you can try some of their most popular wines before you buy, take just a sip, or have a whole glass. Up to you. With the addition of the tables, we’re sure it won’t be long before customers start catching on.
