Sukhumvit Soi 11’s latest addition is a sophisticated craft cocktail bar

Local art adorns the walls, craft cocktails are designed and mixed behind the bar and upbeat tunes by Bangkok’s local artists set the mood. W XYZ bar is back with a totally new atmosphere and ambiance.

The first thing that has changed is the drink menu. The emphasis now is on craft cocktails and craft beer. Ok we know about craft beer, but craft cocktails are something new for Bangkok. Wondering what makes a craft cocktail different from the usual drinks served up at any bar? So were we.

The major difference is that fresh, local fruits, vegetables and spices are crafted into ingredients for cocktails in-house, right at the bar. Syrups, mixes, flavorings and garnishes are all made from fresh local ingredients. The cocktails are then designed and created by the expert craftsmen.

To be considered a craft cocktail, local flavors should also be reflected in the drinks themselves. At W XYZ bar, Thai culture is highlighted with a selection of locally-inspired concoctions like Thai Long Iced Tea, Spicy Kaffir Lime Bubbles and Fiery Mangitini, to name a few.

They haven’t forgotten craft beer, though. How could they, when Bangkok’s biggest drinking trend looks like it’s here to stay? Here you’ll find everything from American to Italian craft brews. There is an extensive range of bottled beer from microbreweries across the world and the bar also features three rotating taps. As each keg is drained, a new, unexpected craft beer will take its place.

When W XYZ bar underwent a revamp, it was a natural step to introduce the craft concept to the Soi 11 fixture. Winfried Sanders, the Manager, Beverage & Food at Aloft Bangkok Sukhumvit 11 described the new concept as a result of their craftsmen, who are passionate about “their local and unique Thainess.” According to Winfried, “care, attention and creativity to get the perfectly matched ingredients is what we do at W XYZ bar.”

You can really hear that care and attention in the music as well. The ambiance wouldn’t be the same without Live@Aloft, W XYZ bar’s live music set by local artists. Launch night featured Jenny and The Scallywags, one of Bangkok’s favorite new artists. With influences from Led Zeppelin, Al Green, Maroon 5 and Arcade Fire, their soulful yet sweet sounds are making serious waves in the city’s music scene.

The Thai-Swedish singer started singing at age 12 in her family band. By 2013 she stole the spotlight at The Voice Thailand with her rendition of “Somewhere Only We Know.” Then Jenny and The Scallywags appeared on Project Aloft Star in 2015, where they captured the judges attention with the original song, “Sounds Like Maybe.”

Jenny and The Scallywags will soon embark on their Southeast Asia Tour, but you can still catch them Live@Aloft along with some unique craft cocktails and a super cool ambiance. And to celebrate W XYZ bar’s new concept, buy 1 craft cocktail or craft beer and get 1 free from 5pm until 1am, until February 29, 2016.

W XYZ bar’s new design makes it perfect for intimate gatherings or stylish private events. For more information on W XYZ bar and Aloft Sukhumvit 11, check out their Facebook page and website.
