Starbucks Thailand ditches plastic straws, raises cup discount through Feb

Starbucks Thailand announced Thursday that all stores nationwide will replace single-use plastic straws with those made of paper starting next week.

After New Year’s Day brought an end to free plastic bags at more than 40 shopping malls and department stores, the major American coffee chain has jumped on board by saying no to plastic straws from Monday.

According to Starbucks, their new paper straws — available in standard and large sizes — are biodegradable and made from responsibly sourced paper certified by the Forest Stewardship Council, a nonprofit organization which promotes responsible management of the world’s forests.

The coffeehouse will also offer THB20-discount for customers who bring their own cups to its 300-plus stores nationwide. The limited offer starts Wednesday and ends Feb. 19. Bringing reusable cups any other day will still get the existing THB10 discount.
