Hot pots aren’t just for family reunions anymore. Foodies and fans of spicy pots o’ hot have been heading to a new spot in Siam Square where meats and veggies are seasoned with tongue-numbing mala.
Years in the making, Chinese joint Da Tang Hotpot was recently opened by the folks from Nice Two Meat U, Fire Tiger by Seoulcial Club, and Mil Toast House.
“We have prepared for four years. Shabu [Japanese hot pot] is my favorite food, so we’ve been tasting many recipes to select the best hot pot. And today we are ready to open Da Tang Hot Pot,” owner Chutima Pruengmethangkul said.
The restaurant has a modern Chinese den vibe with authentic hot pot options. The menu includes suki and shabu, and diners can choose from four soups: spicy mala, pepper, vegetables, and stewed rice.
Must-try dishes are the A5 Japanese wagyu slices (THB1,190) and kurobuta pork belly slices (THB380). To stay awake all day, try dipping the kurobuta pork chili blanket (THB380) in spicy mala soup – good god, is it spicy.
Seafood suits the stewed rice so put in Hokkaido scallops (THB240), sea bass slices (THB140), or shrimp paste (THB230), and don’t forget the deep-fried dough sticks (THB20) for a crunch.
For a boost of energy, try stir-fried mala with kurobuta pork and Japanese potato noodles (THB295) and fried taro sticks (THB190), and wash it all down with a cantaloupe frappe (THB150), watermelon frappe (THB130), or chrysanthemum milk tea (THB130).
Da Tang isn’t just about the food; the floors are decked out for some photos, too. The first floor is in Modern Chinese style with the red neon Chinese characters; the second is Chinese brothel style, with off-white lanterns above and blue-green wall lights. Finally the third floor is decorated like a Chinese palace with golden walls and a private space for those big hot pot table parties.
Da Tang Hotpot is located in Soi Siam Square 3. It’s open 11am to 11pm every day.
