The Public Health Ministry is set to push forward its “No Drinking Day” campaign in the hopes of reducing accidents and crimes.
After a meeting with related agencies, Public Health Minister Pradit Sintavanarong said that “No Drinking Day” can no longer be promoted on the same day as the Buddhist Lent, as the religious festival changes every year.
The ministry will, therefore, set up a specific day to promote the no drinking campaign. The minister said it should be placed on a day with a typically high incidence of traffic accidents – such as December 31, January 1, or during the Songkran festival.
However, he said the new holiday will have to be approved by the cabinet first. The minister said he would also be looking for an approval by international organizations like the World Health Organization (WHO) to make the “No Drinking Day” official.
