Primo pastas at Punnawithi’s best bistro

Look for a really good Italian restaurant in Bangkok and you’ll find dozens of incredible bistros and trattorias throughout town, but all those imported ingredients are not cheap. Go budget and you risk wannabe “Italian” places that commit atrocities like serving ketchup on the pizza. The bottom line in Bangkok is there’s no middle ground when it comes to Italian—except for a small, cozy joint all the way out on Sukhumvit 101/1 called Casa Pasta.

This quaint little corner restaurant is a bit of a hike, but the incredible value is worth the trek. While other trendy Italian establishments are slinging their pasta for THB300+ a bowl, Casa Pasta prices their homemade pasta at a modest THB160-190. This is a neighborhood haunt with an understated outward appearance that won’t draw the trendy eater crowd. Once you’re inside, however, the white table clothes and Italian mementos create an air of authenticity for the entire operation.

The best thing about Casa Pasta is the simplicity of its menu. First pick your pasta, then pick your sauce. Choose between spaghetti, penne, fusilli, angel hair or linguini. The sauces range from traditional alfredo, carbonara and bolognese, to more exotic offerings like amatriciana, a sauce made with tomato sauce, bacon, onions, garlic, and chilli; or vongole, a white wine sauce with clams. Depending on your selection, you’ll be spending between THB159-190 for an excellent plate of perfectly cooked al dente pasta – something truly rare in Bangkok.

Casa pasta’s pizzas are also fantastic and priced well-below the competition. Try the pizza half moon (THB250) for something different. It’s topped with ham and mushroom, with dollops of mascarpone thrown in, all drizzled with truffle sauce. For the more cautious foodie, the pizza margarita (THB190) is an incredibly safe bet, as it makes use of the same delicious marinara sauce used in the pasta dishes.
