Blending the essence of Thai food with a “farang” atmosphere is a tricky task since most of the best restaurants in Bangkok are characterized by an unequivocal national or international identity. Impressively, Good Story on Phra Athit manages to straddle this cross cultural divide by offering a menu of compelling Thai fare in a setting where hip Thais and foreign Khao San-ers will feel at home.
The interior is reminiscent of an Irish pub without the grunge. Neo-industrial touches like polished concrete floors and velvet furniture add to the modern ambiance.
As for the food, it goes beyond the standard Thai staples. Stir fried ostrich meat with black pepper (THB180) and spare ribs in brandy sauce (THB130) are suited for palettes that crave gamey, hearty meats. For those seeking a lighter option, the Salmon in spicy lemongrass salad (THB130) offers a cool medley of smoked salmon pieces and lemongrass stalks in a mouth-puckering, zesty sauce. If you have no appetite for adventure there is of course Pad Thai and various iterations of standard rice dishes.
Pleasantly surprising is the impressive selection of Belgian brews. In addition to the usual suspects like Singha and Heineken, more quality brews like Duvel, Chimay, Kriek and Triple Karmeliet are available at THB220 per bottle. Domestics ring in at a reasonable THB80.
The venue is rather small, so service is sharp and snappy. The usual crowd consists of a mix of trendy Thais and farangs staying around the riverfront area. The close proximity to Thammasat means you’ll get gaggles of college girls and small gangs of guitar-wielding bros. But that’s what Good Story is great for, a good place to take visiting friends. The vibe suits all tastes and the Thai food is aroii.
