Forget about cheeses and head to part of Bangkok’s old town, where the wine’s paired with pad thai.

Known for heading the kitchen at Michelin-starred Le Du in the Silom area, chef Thitid “Ton” Tassanakajohn has teamed up with his brother to open a new venture dubbed Mayrai PadThai Wine Bar, a restaurant-slash-bar where the popular street dish is matched with wine.

Mayrai is housed inside a nearly-200-year-old shophouse decorated in red neon. There it serves several types of pad thai – the famed stir-fried noodles with eggs and sweet-sour sauce dish – for diners to select: the original, wallet-friendly Pad Thai Mayrai (THB79), Pad Thai Kor Moo Yang (THB189), which features slow-cooked pork neck, and Pad Thai Beef Wagyu (THB490).

Those who like seafood should try the Pad Thai Goong Mae Nam (THB690) that comes topped with giant river prawns.

For drinks, the bar has a great selection of nearly 100 wines – with an emphasis on the biodynamic, natural and organic. A single glass of wine starts at THB200.

Otherwise the bar also offers another option for a kick: traditional Thai herbal moonshine, aka yadong.

Mayrai is located on Maha Rat Road in Bangkok’s Phra Nakhon district. It can be reached by boat from the river at Tha Tien or by subway via MRT Sanam Chai. It’s open noon to midnight every day except Tuesday.
