Nice Rice Twice: Thailand’s Hom Mali jasmine rice voted world’s best for second year

The World Rice Conference, where the planet’s top rices battle it out for the top title, went down this week in Macau. For the second year in a row, Thailand’s jasmine variety of Hom Mali won the prestigious rice title, with second and third places being awarded to Cambodian and Vietnamese rices.

Chookiat Ophaswongse, honorary president of the Thai Rice Exporters Association, announced yesterday that the Hom Mali 105 variety of rice is the World’s Best Rice for 2017, reported Bangkok Post.

World-class chefs were among the judges and the most important criteria were taste and the shape of the grains.

It is expected that the title win will bump up Thai rice revenue globally. Hom Mali already fetches an impressive US$850 (THB28,100) per ton. The Cambodia rice that won silver goes for US$750 per ton while the bronze Vietnamese winner sells for US$550 (THB18,200).

The competition had 21 entries and three were from Thailand. We’re assuming that rice was on the menu at all meals during the conference.
