Soi Sukhumvit 20 has a new joint where diners – and their fuzzy friends – can escape the city’s hustle in a Balinese, oasis-like hangout.
Amid the concrete jungle, The Deck Bangkok fills two floors and sports a deck with lush greenery overlooking Phrom Phong traffic for people and their canine companions to look down upon.
Expect some serious food and drinks as the venture is by industry veterans Bye Wongchindawest (Fatboy Sushi, Kim Jeong Grill, Mod Kaew Wine Bar), Vikram Arunagiri (Gulp), Damian MacKay (formerly of Hemingway’s) and Michael Fairweather (tequila importer Inspirador).
The kitchen is led by the Italian-American chef Leonard Nigro, whose culinary career has unfolded in Hong Kong, New York, and Tuscany. His style is comfort food packed with creativity and fun little twists. Start off with a Green Tea Soba Noodle Salad (sesame dressing, mizuna, kale, negi, furikake for THB290). Vegetarian options to choose from include the Mushroom Tempura (maitake, oyster, shimeji, yuzu mayo for THB190).
Next, try the Beef Tartare (THB290). This is not the beef tartare you’re used to: It comes served on brioche with a creamy Korean chili paste. For something heavier, try the Makhani Macaroni (THB320). Think mac & cheese but with Indian chicken masala.
Pizza fans normally have to choose between New York- or Italian-style, but since the chef is New York-native Italian-American, the pizzas here are a hybrid of both (ranging from THB220 to THB380).
The menu list will keep evolving and add more creative items.
Customers are more than welcome to bring their fluffy friends as the place is dog-friendly. Chef Leonard said he will whip up some dog treats in the future.
But is it worth a repeat visit? The huge, leafy outdoor seating area is not something that comes easily in Bangkok. Take a seat outdoors in the plants and trees and open a bottle of wine in the afternoon. Those who want to get away from the bright sun can hang out at the massive bar in the indoor dining area.
The Deck Bangkok is located in Soi Sukhumvit 20, a few minutes by foot from BTS Asok or Phrom Phong. It’s open from noon until midnight every day.
