NIGHT PROWL — If international DJs are the new rock stars, then Cesare Marchese leads the epitome of the lifestyle. The half-Italian, half-Polish producer from Sicily is in a different part of the world every week. He tours the United States three times a year and holds residences in Moscow, New York and Munich. Right now, the producer who works as “Cesare vs Disorder” is living in Berlin, but he’ll spend the summer in Ibiza before moving to Brazil.
“My fiancé is from there, and she’s ready to go back to that side of the world,” he laughed.
Marchese is also a painter, photographer and video-maker – when I met up with him at café around the corner from his studio in Berlin, he was coming straight from a quick shower after an off an all-night bender in the recording booth. The producer and DJ’s tour through Thailand – starting with his Bangkok debut at Glow Nightclub on Friday – is about as close as it gets to vacation. And he prefers to keep it that way.
“Art is a lifestyle, and I’m really living it,” explained Marchese. “I’m not just making music in a bedroom with my parents in the other room, and I don’t depend on anyone else. I do what comes into my mind and follow my heart.”
So as you can see, the life of a serious DJ and producer isn’t all that laidback. Right now, he’s got a lot of deadlines to meet with labels like Get Physical, Control and his own label, Serialism. Marchese must carefully balance which nights are “gigs” and which are “parties” – or pay a gruesome price on those 10-hour plane rides.
“I’m trying to select those moments when I can have proper fun, and it’s hard, I’m still learning,” he chuckled good-naturedly.
Cesare’s definitely had more than his fair share of “holy shit” club nights, especially after living in London for 10 years. He played surreptitious gigs in abandoned warehouses in East London, ranging from “really squatty to refined with just lots of cool people,” he explained. But those verboten days are pretty much over, save for the odd incident like what recently happened in New York.
“It was in Brooklyn, one of those converted warehouses, underground but very hipster,” said Cesare. “It was illegal and the police came in and arrested some of the organizers, some people and made like 600 or 700 people go out without their coats. It was really cold, November in New York!”
Brazil won’t be any slower, as he’ll be working with the famous São Paolo club D.Edge to make events while his agency in South America sorts out gigs. He’s looking forward to getting a bit of inspiration and reprieve in beautiful Thailand.
“Music is the base, but one day I want to also do something different,” he said. “I would like to produce movies and write a book.”
