Bakery Happy Hour: How to eat like a bakery prince on a pauper’s budget

Some days thrice-shredded quail’s liver and molecular gastronomy just aren’t necessary. Some days a simple sandwich and a slice of cake washed down with some tea or coffee would do just fine.

Don’t want to skimp on the quality but wallet not overflowing with cash? Well, if you get to certain hotels, the end of every working day brings opportunities to dine on some quality goods at more reasonable prices than you might otherwise expect. Here’s a list of some places you might want to check out if you’re looking for a chance to dine on decent baked goods at a discount.

Bangkok Baking Company

The Bangkok Baking Company sells stuff at half-price after 6pm. We’re talking about bread, sandwiches, salads and pastries. It’s located just past the Café, with the shop taking up a relatively small space amid the larger dining area. If you have time to spare, this certainly isn’t a bad place to sit down and enjoy a meal, especially when it’s less crowded. If you are willing to spend your hard earned cash on something other than the discounted goods, you can try the rest of their menu, given that they are open for dinner.

Café Boca

From 6pm until 10:30pm, this traditional Thai restaurant has a happy hour during which pastries, cakes, and certain dairy products are sold at half-price. Sandwiches and salads are offered at half their usual price, with takeaway meals being part of the deal for these discounted goods. Those open to opening their wallets a bit more might also be pleased to know that regular meals are also served here, with their Thai menu being supplemented by an array of Western dishes such as soups and pasta.

More half-price items at this deli, where Happy Hour lasts from 5pm until the shop closes at 7pm. Try the sandwiches, salads and some other counter items. Pastries enter the deal when the clock hits 6pm. The Deli is found in the Lobby Arcade, which opens each day at 8am. Aside from the items on sale, those who are willing to purchase items at full price can sample the handmade cookies, teas, and coffees. Diners can also check out the celebration cakes, and, assuming they live within the neighboring area, have their items delivered.

Dusit Gourmet

Specializing in handmade sweets, chocolate, and coffee, this particular location offers 50 percent discounts on certain items after 8pm if you buy takeaway. This discount applies to sandwiches, breads and cake. However, customers have to wait for the shop’s staff to hand out queue cards starting at 7:55pm, so if you want to ensure getting to try out some of their remaining goods at a good price, you better set your watch, which I know none of you actually wear anymore, so try your phone.

From 7pm to closing time at 9pm each day, Gourmandises offers 50 percent discounts on items such as salads, baked goods, and the cake of the day, although this applies only to those items present at the counter. Those willing to splurge a bit can also try the drinks, Royal Buthan Jam, ice cream, macaroons, and Thai appetizers.

Every day from 7pm to closing time at 9pm, the Landmark Bakery & Café at the Landmark has a Happy Hour promotion during which the remaining bakery items (found on the bakery counter, of course) are available on a buy-one, get-one basis for take away purchase only (regular dining and service does not fit into the promotion). Said bakery items include sandwiches, small cakes, and packed meals such as pies and rolls, the last of which are also sold right outside the building.

La Pâtisserie

As with other locations, La Pâtisserie also refers to its discount period as Happy Hour, with the shop offering a 30 percent discount on all freshly-baked breads, baguettes, croissants, and cakes during this time. Happy Hour here runs from 6pm to 7pm from Monday to Friday, so those of you getting off work should take notes. If you like a mix of Japanese and Western pastries, you might be open to trying out the other items on the menu, which manages to stand out among those of the other places on this list for that very reason.

You can even combine some of the aforementioned ingredients with your choice of fillings to customize your sandwiches. And if you want that extra touch of class, there’s always the wine corner for you snobs on a budget.
